Lanza Rumbles to Victory at the Rock

On Wednesday night at North Carolina Motor Speedway it was Sim Pro Racing Cup Series veteran Dave Lanza driving to victory in his #08 National Guard Chevrolet Impala. Lanza, along with his fellow Cup Series drivers started one lap down to the Grand National division drivers in the event presented by Wolfe Graphix. Richard Carr and Wyatt Wolfe Sr. started on the front row of the event that ran 122 consecutive laps caution free before the first and only caution flew for the #97 car of Sherry Lowery spun off turn two. The event would be dominated by Grand National regulars Bobby Whetzel and Joey Hilton as the two traded the lead many times during green flag pit stops. When the yellow flag flew on the 122nd circuit, it put Cup Series drivers Lanza and John Hanna back on the lead lap, joining Whetzel, Wolfe Sr., Hilton and Jack O’Brien in front of the field. With twenty-to-go, Lanza took the lead for the final time and pulled away from the three car battle for second to take the checkered flag first. O’Brien, who led on the final restart held off Hanna and Whetzel, who swapped third with two laps to go. Completing the top five was Wolfe Sr., who made a last lap pass on Hilton for the postion. Sean Love, point champion for the Cup series finished as the first car one lap down in seventh but worked his way up ahead of O’Brien in the final run.
